Marian Bakker: Oog voor vrouwen / Eye4women
Fotografe Marian Bakker heeft in de jaren 80 en 90 het lesbische lief en leed vastgelegd: OOG VOOR VROUWEN
brengt ruim 20 jaar lesbisch leven in beeld.
Lesbische emancipatie en activisme in de jaren tachtig en negentig is het onderwerp van een foto-expositie
in de Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam. Fotografe en kunstenaar Marian Bakker heeft van 1979 tot 2003 dicht op de huid gezeten
van het lesbische leven in Nederland. Dat heeft geresulteerd in een unieke registratie van activiteiten, acties en evenementen
van lesbische vrouwen en vrouwengroepen die voortvloeiden uit de tweede feministische golf. Marian Bakkers werk vertelt het verhaal
van het lesbische leven van binnenuit, via thema's als woon- en kraakgroepen (oa in het NRC Handelsbladgebouw), vrouwencollectieven
(Garage Knalpot, fietsenwinkel Zijwind, boekhandel Xantippe), uitgaans- en café- leven (Crea, Saarein, Dansfloor, Vivelavie),
manifestaties (roze zaterdagen, demo's), vriendinnen, de lesbische familie en zelfs het lesbisch huisdier. Haar werk beweegt
zich zowel op het gebied van documentaire fotografie als visuele kunst. Zij werkte mee aan de tentoonstelling Goed Verkeerd in
het Amsterdams Historisch Museum en was huisfotograaf van de Amsterdamse Gay Games in 1998. Met deze expositie neemt zij afscheid
van IHLIA-Homodok waarvoor zij exposities en culturele activiteiten organiseerde.

DIANA BLOK Fotoboek SEE THROUGH US
Diana Blok maakte foto portretten + geeft de bijbehorende levensverhalen van homoseksuele vrouwen/mannen en transgenders in Turkije:
in 2008 bezocht Diana Istanbul en sprak met Turkse homo's, lesbiennes, biseksuelen en transgenders over hun leven binnen een
traditionele samenleving die aan het veranderen is: MEER
Het mooie, gebonden FOTOBOEK ligt bij Vrolijk: 'SEE THROUGH US Portraits and stories of gay women/ men and transsexuals
in Turkey'.
Through the eyes of the Dutch, Istanbul is seen as a city far behind Amsterdam. And yet, surprisingly in
Istanbul and Ankara the Turkish community accepts homosexuals much more than the Turkish community in Amsterdam.
During her visit to Istanbul in 2008 Diana Blok discovered an active gay nightlife more visible and open than expected. She imagined
the lesbian world to be totally hidden but found it to be most open in terms of meeting and speaking, even though there is no
clear Lesbian community. Gay bars for men are more common, but their willingness to share their lives was more hidden. It is
better to be a tough woman in Turkey, they said, than a fragile man.
Diana Blok got in touch with two organizations (Pink House and KAOS GL), both active with issues of sexual orientation and gender
identity for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals concerning human rights. With their help she found subjects who could
relate to her photographic work and were willing to pose for the camera and speak openly about their lives. They shared their
courageous, heartfelt stories and the difficulties they face to be free human beings within the traditional society in which
they live. Many gay men, lesbians or transsexuals lead a double life.
It is a complex subject within a complex country in the process of change. Some socio-cultural aspects are opening, others disappearing
and yet others hiding. Physical and psychological harassment towards these individuals is still common.
Although it is not illegal to be lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans in Turkey, there are still discrimination practices and persecutions
against them.
'Having been brought up in Latin America as a Catholic I wondered how the taboos of my upbringing differed from that of the
Turkish society today. It is obvious that there is still a great problem with visibility, but it has become clear that there
is also change and dreams which very slowly take on a new form,' says Diana Blok. This project is dedicated to all individuals
who struggle for a voice to express their love.
DIANA BLOK (1952, Montevideo Uruguay) grew up in Colombia, Mexico and Guatemala. Since 1974 she lives and works in Amsterdam.
She is self-taught. Her work is exhibited, published and purchased worldwide. Since 1985, she often participated in group exhibitions
in the Melkweg Galerie, where in 2005 her last solo exhibition "Paradise In Disguise" was shown. Issues around sexual
identity are always a returning theme in the photo work of Diana Blok.

zijn vastgelegd. Ze zijn bovendien een statement over het onvervreemdbaar recht van vrouwen op een eigen leven.

Frank house), the Red Light District, Madame Tussaud, the New Church ('Nieuwe Kerk') and of course the Royal Palace.

By car:
There are several ways to get to the city center when coming from outside Amsterdam. When you enter the Ring (A10), we recommend
to take the northern exit S116 Noord towards the IJ-tunnel. Exiting the tunnel, you take a right at the Prins Hendrikkade, drive
past the Central Station; turn left at the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal. After 200 meters there's a parking garage at the Nieuwezijds Kolk, from which it's a 3 minute walk to our bookshop.
Walking down the 'Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal' heading towards the city center, the Paleisstraat is at your right hand after the
Albert Heijn supermarket behind the Royal Palace. Bear in mind that traffic can be different from what city maps suggest, and
parking spots on the old Amsterdam canals are expensive and hard to find.

By public transport (trams):
From the Central Station you can take a number of trams which will get you to our store: tram lines 1, 2 or 5, which will
go into the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal. Exit at the second stop (Magna Plaza behind the Dam square) and continue walking in the
same direction (past the Royal Palace and the Albert Heijn supermarket), and enter the Paleisstraat, the second street on
your right.
Alternatively you can take trams 4, 9, 16, 24 and 25, exit at the first stop (Damrak); walk towards Dam square
(10 seconds). Facing the Royal Palace, there are two small streets on both sides of the Palace. The one on your left is the Paleisstraat,
and then you walk 2 minutes to number 135. |
