Movie director Derek Jarman created his own garden, from 1985 till his death in 1994, in the flat bleak expanse of shingle that faces the nuclear power station in Dungeness, Kent, and Derek Jarman combined his painter's eye and his ecological convictions to produce a landscape: sculptures made from stones; the area's indigenous plants; and shrubs and flowers introduced by Jarman himself.
The Derek Jarman movie THE GARDEN is a powerful and moving series of allegorical dreamscapes. The narrative unfolds to find Jarman asleep at his desk, surrounded by Christian imagery. His dreams transpose to New Testament events into a con- temporary context, examining repressive attitudes towards homosexuality, the AIDS crisis and exploring Jarman's own feelings towards the church. Featuring a brilliant score by Simon Fisher Turner, THE GARDEN is a visual tour-de-force from the acclaimed director of 'Sebastiane' and 'Jubilee'.
