PATRICK GALE schrijft meeslepende verhalen met vele grappige elementen. In zijn dertiende roman is dit bondige liefdesverhaal ontmoeten een man en een vrouw elkaar 20 jaar na het verbreken van hun relatie, en ze kunnen niet ontkennen dat er nog gevoelens voor elkaar zijn. Maar wat gaan ze daar mee doen?
Het is ook een roman over verplichting. Ben en Laura hebben beiden hun leven overhoop gegooid om voor familieleden te kunnen zorgen: Ben voor zijn jongere homobroer met het Syndroom van Down en Laura voor haar zonderlinge, briljante moeder.

Gale laat doorschemeren dat alhoewel de zorgverlening oprecht is, deze, hoe summier ook, wel degelijk een excuus is voor de blunders die zij eerder in hun levens maakten.

Wederom onderzoekt Gale het menselijk geheugen en haar trukendoos. De lezer leeft één dag met de hoofdpersonen, maar reist ook terug in hun gedeelde en hun gescheiden verledens, en ziet hoe zij dezelfde gebeurtenis geheel verschillend interpreteerden. Ook hier is een favoriet thema van Gale verweven: hoe wij zijn gevormd door onze jeugd.

Patrick Gale is in 1962 geboren op Isle of Wight. Zijn kinderjaren bracht hij door bij de gevangenis van Wandsworth, waarvan zijn vader directeur was. Daarna groeide hij op in Winchester en haalde in 1983 in Oxford zijn doctoraal Engels. Hij woont met zijn man Aiden Hacks op een boerderij in zuidwest Engeland in Cornwall.

It's a day in the life of Laura, a forty-something woman who has recently been obliged to move in with her elderly mother, because the latter is a committed, lifelong naturist who no conventional care home wants to admit...

Against the slow unfurling of their day and evening together we get glimpses of the heroine's odd childhood (the only lefty, naturist parents in a conservative community) but also learn of her bittersweet, recently revived relationship with the great love of her student days. He, too, is a carer - obliged to move in with his gay Downs Syndrome brother since their mother's death - and he's a venereologist, so quite inured to nudity. But what or who broke them apart twenty years ago and is it about to happen again?

Although on one level it's a bittersweet love story it's also a novel about the dynamics of family relationships and the way these shape our ability to love:

Set in the measured course of a glorious summer's day in Winchester, the picturesque Hampshire city where I grew up, it tells the story of accountant Laura Lewis, who has stumbled into a passionately revived love affair with a married doctor she hasn't seen since they were student sweethearts 20 years earlier.
So far so ordinary, you might think, but there are flies in the romantic ointment: both Laura and Ben are committed to caring for relatives - she for her brilliant, crippled mother, he for his gay brother who has Mosaic Down's Syndrome. Then there are the added complications of her mother being a committed naturist and his brother throwing himself with reckless abandon into a late discovery of sex. Will Laura and Ben be brave enough to take the second chance at happiness which fate has offered them? Or will they be defeated by the need, instilled in their obedient childhoods, to do the right thing? And just what or who drove him to dump her the first time around?
I hope you'll enjoy discovering the answers to these questions as much as I enjoyed concocting them.
