most published male photographers in the world and his previous best-selling books include 'Three',
'Tales', 'Jagged Youth', 'Pictures of Fred' and 'The Edge of Desire'. Critics have called Roffman
as much a biographer as he is a pictorialist and a master photographer whose images totally

Johan Paulik's introduction to the book
I've heard that the professional life of a video performer is quite short. I started working when
I was just 18 and people liked me because of my youth and my slender body. They liked my 'boyish charm'.
But now, at the tender age of 25, despite the many nice compliments I receive, I think that my modelling
career is nearing the end. My friend, Lukas, who feels the same, tells me that there's still hope
for us: we are becoming suitable material for 'Honcho' and then later on, for 'Bear'. After all, I
just read in the newspaper that the oldest erotic model is now 73!
 But then Howard Roffman
contacted me and lifted my spirits. He said that I shouldn't care that I am not any longer a spring
chicken, becoming a man suits me. That my scars are beauty-marks of experience. And that I am not
fat, I am ... voluptuous. These are ideas that can turn a guy's head!
Since I have been exclusive with Bel Ami, I was a bit nervous about how shooting with another photographer
would be. But Howard made me feel relaxed. He works differently from George Duroy, Bel Ami's producer
and director, but I quickly got used to his style and appreciated his choice of black and white photography.
 Howard has a huge house overlooking San
Francisco and I fell in love with Max and Molly, his dogs. I was exhilarated by the beautiful nature
at the Russian River where we worked. It was a happy time.
I can pay Howard the biggest compliment by saying that I had the same feeling with him that I have
at Bel Ami: the work never felt like work. I hope you all like this book as much as I liked making
it.
