Beautiful story about the love of two young women, Angela and Sara. On a small, imaginary island off 19th-century Sicily, when the 'Thousand' have landed to reunite Italy, Angela, 25, loves Sara and seeks to ride out the scandal over her own homosexuality by disguising herself as a man.
Angela agrees to completely change her outward appearance, disguising herself as a man, but in her heart she never denies her identity as a woman.
In the film, the various stages of their passion, the moments of awareness, of joy, happiness and sorrow, are interwoven with the seasons of nature and its patterns, sometimes radiant and peaceful, sometimes raging, and these give a rhythm to the unfolding of the story.
Angela isn't like the other girls of her same age. She runs, smokes and fears nothing and nobody. All her feelings are for the young Sara. A forbidden relationship in a 19th century Sicily. Only a deceit - changing her outward appearance, disguising herself as a man - might be a solution. Shut up in a cave by her father, a tyrannical paterfamilias, when she refuses an arranged marriage, Angela is saved by a trick her mother cooks up: she convinces the curate to change Angela's name and sex on her birth certificate. That's how Angela turns into Angelo: sporting a cap and a cigar, and a picture-perfect family. An intense examination of the frontiers of identity as well as geography, the story interweaves fact, legend and poetry and re-evokes an ancient scandal lost in time!
